Of School, Spuds & Kak..

Spud the Movie is about to be released and I am incredibly keen to see it! I loved – loved – loved the books and am holding all my bits that movie is every bit as awesome!

I don’t really know why I enjoy the story of John Milton (Spud) as much as I do, as I am not a boy (nor have I ever been) and I never attended boarding school and quite honestly school was an incredible bore with only a few interesting bits thrown in for me..

I was always looking for things to make my day interesting and less scheduled. My teachers definitely had their work cut out for them with regards to my shenanigans. But just like Cath, I too will never tell my kids about most of what transpired on the off chance that they think it is a license for them to cause kak!

The cruelest thing I think I ever did was to my Home/Registration teacher in Grade 8. She was an afrikaans biology teacher (afrikaans school nogal). Anyway so she gave me such a hard through the year, nitpicking constantly and as much as I laugh most things off she was really starting to tick me off. So one day I decided that I would teach her a lesson in humility as it were.

To start her day, every day, she would ask one of the pupils to go around the side of the classroom(outside tap) and fill up her empty 2l coke bottle with water. This would then sit on her desk and she would proceed to drink this throughout the day. That morning I went with one of the other boys in the class before she got there to fill her bottle with water, only it wasn’t to be a 100% H2O. Yes, you are correct. I got him to pee in the bottle a little bit before we returned to class !

The colour was a slightly off but we got around that because the water used to get “rusty” sometimes so she just thought it was that.. so there she was, all day drinking her water..completely unaware of the true contents of her bottle of ‘water’.

At the end of the day with only about a quarter of water/piss left in the bottle.. I walked up to her and asked her if she enjoyed her water.. cos it looks like piss to me…

And with that the whole class laughed and laughed and laughed (they all knew by now). Watching her face then was very interesting as I saw realisation dawn on her, her face changing from a smile to confusion to horror. And just like that she ran out the classroom…with roar of laughter growing behind her.

I feel kind of bad about it. But I think if you are going to trust kids to full your water bottle you definitely need to be nicer to them….
