Fokken Prawns, ekse!
October 3rd, 2009

I wish I had known better.. wish people had told me.. wish the cameraman was more considerate..

What VERY few people know about me is that I have a handicap..and not in the cool golf handicap style or the kind of handicap that secures me cool parking at the pav or even the kind you will know about unless you tried to show me your *adorable* home movies or challenged me to “Need For Speed” on the PS2.

I have a very obnoxious visual impairment that left me half dead whilst watching “Pursuit of Happiness” and “Perfect Storm” to name but a few. I have never been able to see 3D and every attempt has left me feeling like a my head may explode through my ears and left me in a heaving mess. Home Movies are just DREADFUL! The camera moves so much that I want to toss my cookies and pass out like a drunk..Fast Games, have a similiar effect.

district-9

Sooo, I am telling you all this so that you may understand my pain as I watched “District 9″ last night..

What an awesome movie.. if only the cameraman could’ve found a frikken tripod to help stabilise his obvious nervousness in the face of the “Fokken Prawns”! Although Wikus Van De Merwe (without the r) seemed completely fearless and was even seen offering the little ones sweeties!! LOL!! He was a real treat and he had me giggling in my seat more than once even though I felt like a drunken sailor on terraferma.

I unfortunately didn’t see the whole movie with me having to leave the cinema to catch my breath and wash my face during some of the scenes, but what I did see was hugely impressive!

The introduction of the Nigerians was an excellent touch, this and other true re-enactments of South African Culture allowed me to interact and relate to such an extent that if you had told me you knew some *Prawns, whilst watching the movie, I would nod in response as if it was a perfectly natural thing.

South Africa has made me very proud in this production and I look forward to seeing District 10 even if I have to bring my own **barf bag with.. ;-)

*Prawns - I obviously know they aren’t real, not counting the Parktown variety that is .. ;-)

**Camera work needs to improve.. or at least produce a stable version for the handicap..

  1. I believe the camera-shake was actually done on purpose, to maintain the illusion that large parts of it was cut from a low-budget self-shot company promotional video.

You can see how radically it changes in the scenes that are meant to look like news footage or clips from a genuine documentary.

Of course, I can also understand that for people who have trouble with stereoscopy it could be quite arduous to watch.

  2. Noooo you’ve given in!!!! I will have to stand upon my little island of loneliness now.

Glad you enjoyed it tho – despite the little sickies issue. Now that I know though I can remember to warn you about it in the future :P

BTW…Stargate Universe premiered in the States last night. Honestly it seems a little emo and teeny bopper compared to PROPER stargate but I’ll let you know how it is ;)

  3. Oh shame I can imagine this movie would have clashed horribly with that affliction (I assume you never watched blairwitch project  ) – the gore caught me most off guard and was a bit nauseating.
I REALLY enjoyed the movie which makes me doubt my objectivity lol as I generally hate this type of science fiction but I could relate to it like you said on a proudly South African level.
Loved how the characters developed as you got into the movies (when it started i was rather sceptical of if it could be a good movie, felt like we were back in the 80’s loll).
Still dont like prawns though edible or other *gril*
