So the whole “how long do you wait” question really doesn’t/didn’t quite fit. It didn’t really come up that I can recall. I’ve known women who were very uninhibited and those who seemed to need more structure.

So I would say in general, being careful to avoid details, that there are people that one might sleep with without technically “dating” and there are people who you have no intention of having sex with but “date” often (and everything in between). Dating and sex, at least for me, aren’t really bound together.

When to have sex is more a matter of one’s personal belief system (which I lack), and personal health and safety. For most people I would caution that a three date rule might leverage reason over passion, but it also sets up expectation and deadlines.

Casual (safe) sex is fine as is abstinence until marriage. Setting up an arbitrary deadline for sex only creates tension. What is most important is for an individual to know his/her comfort level. For those less inhibited individuals, I would recommend minimizing risks until you know the person very well (i.e., save the freaky stuff for much later).

The reality of sex is that rationality varies inversely with the number of times you’ve slept with an individual. It’s a bit like eating at a new restaurant when you’re hungry. If you’ve eaten there before, you have more self control. Or if you’ve eaten at similar restaurants it isn’t a big deal. But when a new restaurant comes to town with a really good chef, don’t be surprised if you’re ignoring the price tag. So your three-date thing is a bit like dieting. As long as you keep your choices to that bland diet crap, you’ll be fine sticking to it. But where’s the fun in that?

With the current boy toy…technically I had met him through a fright when I was 16, but really we started chatting over the net for about 2 months until we set up a LAN date…and we got drunk and boinked. So that was really a first date thing.

Yes I’m a geek to the core. I had a LAN date. piss off
And that was really all the time we needed. Mainly because both of us had actually been honest during our little time of communications.

Other times it’s taken longer. But I know that doesn’t matter because you’re dying to call me a whore right now
